CHANGER Project at STS Conference Graz 2025
The CHANGER Project was represented at the 23rd Annual Science, Technology and Society (STS) Conference Graz 2025, held from 5 to 7 May in Graz, Austria, through a research poster titled Challenges to Ethics Review of Emerging Technologies by Antonija Mijatović and Ana Marušić, our MEFST partners. The poster highlighted a systematic analysis of ethical challenges faced by research ethics committees in the context of a rapidly evolving research environment.
The conference explored the intersections of science, technology, and society, with a strong focus on emerging challenges and sustainable futures. A major theme of the conference was the governance and ethical oversight of novel technologies, reflecting an increasing societal demand for responsible innovation.
Key elements presented through CHANGER poster included:
- An Evidence and Gap Map (EGM), developed using Python, to visualise the landscape of ethical challenges across emerging technologies.
- A scoping review methodology that incorporated over 800 scientific records and deliverables from EU-funded projects.
- Use of GPT-4 (LLM) for text mining and systematic categorisation of ethical, legal, and technological concerns.
- Findings on regulatory fragmentation, insufficient ethical frameworks, and the need for tailored, technology-specific ethics review processes.
The poster served as a visual and analytical tool to engage conference participants in discussions about the evolving role of ethics in science and technology governance.
