As a network of networks, ENERI brings together researchers and other relevant stakeholders from two important fields: Research Ethics (RE) and Research Integrity (RI). ENERI started in 2016 as a three-year Horizon 2020 project. The project ended in 2019, but the network of networks is still alive and is a great support for the RE and RI community in exchanging, collaborating, and joining forces.

Over the last 17 years, ENRIO has grown from a small group of leading professionals into one of the key players that are advancing research integrity in Europe. The network has successfully built a mission, membership and activities that are comparable to some of the other key research associations in Europe. Since the network’s inception in 2008, ENRIO has rapidly enlarged its membership. Today, the network has 27 members who are spread across 21 countries. This membership development has increased the influence and impact of the network. In 2020 ENRIO became a legal established association enabling it to create an effective long-term strategy for the future of the network, and for the advancement of research integrity in Europe.
ENRIO was founded right after the 1st World Conference on Research Integrity in Lisbon, Portugal in 2007. It began as an initiative by the then director of the UK Research Integrity Office (UKRIO) and six persons who are being concerned with research integrity. They decided to establish an (informal) European Network to enhance research integrity within Europe in a world with growing international cooperation.

In this digital era, technologies are appearing faster than their ethical considerations can be weighed. As research evolves, maintaining high ethical standards is essential to winning public trust in scientific work.
The EU-funded irecs project aims to enhance the credibility of scientific research by strengthening research ethics expertise and competencies. irecs will achieve this by improving the understanding of research ethics in Europe and by training researchers and research ethics reviewers to anticipate and mitigate ethical issues in four technologies: genome editing, AI in healthcare, Extended Reality and biobanking.
Additionally, in collaboration with the European Network of Research Ethics and Research Integrity and the Embassy of Good Science, irecs will establish a unified community for research ethics practitioners, policymakers, and other stakeholders.

The overall objective of this project is to improve the availability and accessibility of research ethics training, education and provide ethics review tools at the European level, including the unique challenges of AI research.
In terms of specific objectives, the project aims to:
– Develop a comprehensive research ethics training curriculum that covers a wide range of topics, including ethical principles, research design, data management, and publication practices, as well as the unique challenges of AI research ethics.
– Deliver research ethics training and education programs through a variety of formats, including in- person workshops, online courses, and webinars.
– Establish a research ethics training and education network that brings together experts and stakeholders from across Europe to share knowledge, resources, and best practices.
– Create a suite of digital content and tools to support the training and education programs, including interactive modules, videos, and case studies, that also address the unique challenges of AI research ethics.
– Develop a digital tool that allows Research Ethics Committees RECs to efficiently manage the review of research proposals.
– Organise a young researcher competition for the creation of social media content on AI research ethics topics and and facilitate participation in Researchers’ Night events.
– Foster better communication and collaboration between researchers and Research Ethics Committees (RECs) through the organisation of workshops and training sessions for both groups, particularly focusing on AI.
The Embassy of Good Science is developed by and for researchers, who are willing to gather and join forces to preserve and safeguard good science. The Embassy is a community platform offering support in handling day-to-day research practices and dilemmas. The platform is a wiki – allowing users to contribute their knowledge and expertise.

POIESIS was a three-year project funded by Horizon Europe that strived to tackle societal mistrust in science by understanding how, and to what extent, societal trust in science, research, and innovation is affected by the aligning of research practices with principles of research integrity and by the integration of citizens and societal stakeholders in different phases of the research cycle.
