[VIDEO] CHANGER Café #5 explores research ethics in crisis situations

On 2 October 2025, CHANGER hosted the fifth from its CHANGER Cafés series, titled Research ethics in crisis situations, this time featuring Professor Dónal O’Mathúna, who debated the ethical considerations and challenges of conducting research in crisis situations, including disasters, humanitarian emergencies, and violent conflicts. The talk examined in depth the moral imperative for research in these contexts, the unique ethical issues that arise, and practical approaches to address them responsibly.

Prof. Dónal O’Mathúna set the question if research should be conducted in crisis situations, arguing that some research should be carried out in disaster sites, during humanitarian crises and in settings of violent conflict. However, he highlighted that conducting research under such circumstances, often raises distinct ethical issues. As he noted, the challenges for research ethics in crises require additional considerations by researchers and those approving and overseeing such research. The event gathered participants via Zoom platform for a 45 focused-minute session that followed a lively and engaging discussion.
