[VIDEO] CHANGER Cafe #4 explores ethical challenges of AI research
On 10 June 2025, CHANGER hosted the fourth from its CHANGER Cafés series, titled Exceptionalism about AI?, this time featuring Professor Hallvard Fossheim, who reflected on whether Artificial Intelligence (AI) requires a fundamentally new approach to research ethics. The event gathered participants via Zoom platform for a focused 30-minute session that combined presentation and discussion.
In his talk, H. Fossheim examined what makes AI research ethically distinct, identifying key challenges and questioning whether traditional ethical frameworks are still adequate. He encouraged participants to consider not only the nature of these challenges but also what ethical resources we already have that might help address them. The talk prompted a discussion among attendees on how best to navigate ethics in fast-moving technological fields.

The session was moderated by Professor Matthias Kaiser, NORSUS, a CHANGER project’s partner. M. Kaiser drew on his own background in philosophy of science and ethics to guide the conversation, linking Fossheim’s reflections to CHANGER’s broader mission of improving ethics processes in research involving new technologies.
