Material available | CHANGER trainings: organoids in research
The third online training session of the CHANGER Project, titled Organoids in Research, took place on 21 October 2026, bringing together experts in research ethics to explore the emerging ethical and legal challenges associated with organoid technologies.
The training provided an overview of the scientific, ethical and legal dimensions of organoids and their applications in research. Particular attention was given to brain organoids and stem cell-based embryo models, examining the specific ethical considerations these innovative research models raise and their implications for ethics review. The session featured expert presentations by Vicky Mollaki, Adrien Bottacci, Kris Dierickx and Ophélie Sauzeau, who addressed the fundamental concepts of organoid research, the relevant legal landscape and the ethical challenges associated with specific applications.
Moving from theory to practice, the training also included an interactive case study on the use of stem cell-based embryo models in research. Through breakout group discussions and a plenary session, participants had the opportunity to reflect on relevant ethical recommendations and discuss approaches to evaluating research involving these emerging technologies. The training formed part of CHANGER’s broader efforts to strengthen ethics review capacity and support research ethics experts in addressing the challenges posed by scientific and technological innovation.
